Harakiri for the Sky Formed in Vienna and Salzburg in 2011, Harakiri for the Sky have established themselves as one of Austria’s most distinctive voices in modern post-black metal. Built around multi-instrumentalist M.S. (Matthias Sollak) and vocalist J.J. (Michael V. Wahntraum), the band combines the intensity of black metal with expansive post-rock, atmospheric metal, melodic hardcore and touches of grunge.
Across albums including Aokigahara, III: Trauma, Arson and 2021’s Mære—which reached No. 4 on the German album chart—Harakiri for the Sky have developed a deeply emotional sound centred on despair, loss, relationships and existential struggle.
Their sixth studio album, Scorched Earth, released through AOP Records in January 2025, pushes that vision further, reflecting a fractured and increasingly uncertain world. Featuring drummer Kerim “Krimh” Lechner alongside several guest vocalists, the record delivers the band’s trademark combination of sweeping melodies, furious aggression and melancholic atmosphere. Harakiri for the Sky remain a powerful and unmistakable force in European extreme metal.
